Birthday plus First Day of school=Not so fun 5th grade

This post is my entry into the Hanes and Parent Bloggers Network Blog Blast!

I was born on Labor Day. Isn’t that funny? No seriously, I was.

Labor day is one of those rotating holidays. I grew up on the East Coast, where school started the day after Labor Day.

Which sucked.

I mean, I was a real goody-goody and I LOVED school. But I couldn’t have a party on my birthday. I couldn’t really bring cupcakes.

I can’t remember how many times my birthday was on the 1st day of school, but I know it was quite a few.

I do distinctly remember this blue and black dress I wore on the first day of school. I have a picture of it somewhere. It is totally bright blue and black with ruffles and weird patterns. It is the epitome of bad 80s fashion. And I think I was close to Bug’s age when I wore it. Do you know that Bug would cut off her left arm before being seen in public in that?

Besides my birthday and my hideous dress, the one thing I remember is wanting a Trapper Keeper. Trapper Keepers were so cool. I think at one point I had the one with the brown horse on it. I can’t remember. Trapper Keeper is a cool phrase. Trapper Keeper. Trapper Keeper. I think we should try to make Trapper Keeper mean something else. I think I’ll start calling the dryer lint thing (Does it have a name?) a Trapper Keeper. Traps the lint and keeps it for you. Try it. Maybe it will catch on.

Happy Back to School. Bug starts tomorrow.

Happy Birthday! May you always have all the Trapper Keepers (my favorite was my bright green one) that you deserve!

OMG! I used to love Trapper Keepers! I would spend FOREVER picking out which one I wanted when school started. My favorite one ever was the swan with a rainbow in back. So super-stylish!

    Happy Birthday!

Oops. I should have been more clear. It isn’t really my birthday. My birthday is in a few weeks! I just meant that school used to always start on my birthday!

Hey you just wrote about my life. LOL.

My birthday was always the first few days of school. My mom dressed me in horrible homemade fashions. She’d sew me pants and vest suits. Not sure when they where in fashion but I know it wasn’t when I was wearing them. and the finale the trapper keeper. I begged and begged but was told they are tooo expensive.

I did finally get my trapper keeper in college. and as a mom I went to buy one for my daughter this year but the school has it on the not allowed list. So no trapper keeper for her either. They say they don’t fit in the lockers.

I was reminiscing with my husband about Trapper Keepers just yesterday! Of course, he’s seven years older than me and had no idea what I was talking about. But oh did I love my green and white Trapper Keeper from 4th grade. Stickers were all the rage that years for some reason (puffy plastic ones) so I had the inside covered with them. Aaaahh, thanks for the walk down memory lane!

We have a law (really they made it a law…it amazes me the pull of the tourism industry) here that school can’t start until after Sept 1. I am shocked that my nephew started school Aug 18 1 state away–that seems early, but waiting until September just doesn’t seem to fit some years. (Or I could rant about the competitive disadvantage the high schools have when it comes to teaching AP classes that have early May test dates.)

I digress. End of rant. My daughter’s birthday is today. She find the birthday at school thing hard too. She celebrated this year’s birthday at the end of May, that was odd. Yet doing it the first week of school, new teacher, new kids–yeah, you know why that’s hard.

Were you the youngest? The oldest? My daughter’s is the youngest–they’ve gotten fairly strict here about the Sept 1 cut-off. I am due with baby #3 in a month–she’ll be one of the oldest in her class, most likely. It seems hard no matter what.

    Happy Pre-birthday!

A New Kids on the Block was the coolest Trapper Keeper!

Is Bug going to public school this year, or still virtual school??

BTW, Bug is on the IM with Cody right now…LOL…

I always wanted a Trapper Keeper too and I never got one. Sniff sniff. Thanks a lot for bringing it up.
