Me: No, I already did.

Now that I’m TV deprived, I’ve been watching a lot of movies. I signed up for Netflix but I’m having trouble finding movies which I haven’t seen or that I’d be interested in. I need some suggestions.

I don’t like horror movies or action movies that consist mostly of people getting blown getting blown up. I do like action type movies where there is some intellectual problem to be solved. Like comedies, romantic comedies, dramas, even romance movies like The Notebook. I’d also like to find movies I can watch with Bug that don’t make me want to poke my eyes out with a stick. For Bug movies, I’d prefer G or PG but if it is a PG13 that isn’t too bad, I can deal. I’d also like TV show recommendations. Like, if I watch Lost from the beginning am I going to understand it? Musicals, documentaries..all good. Movies that I can watch with Geo without him poking his eyes out will be appreciated too.

What should I be watching?

(Oh, and is there anyone else above age 13 here and a fan of High School Musical or am I the only one?)

Ugh- I lost your PW! Could ya email it to me when you get the chance? LOL!@

  2. Jax Says:

How could people not like musicals? :-) Have you watched the King and I with Bug? I love that one!

I don’t know if netflix will have them, but on blockbuster you can get the muppets season 1. It’s still cute and fun! Also, you might want to try Pee-wee’s playhouse. It cracks me up. And I realized that the show actually tried to encourage a lot of good behavior as far as how you treat people. It’s also fast paced, so it’s great fun.

That’s what I thought of off the top of my head. Enjoy!

    I have so many suggestions!

Dear Frankie is lovely, as is Gerard Butler. We just watched him in Attila, too.

We liked National Treasure and Sahara together - good action and still good for kids. Last weekend, we watched The Great Escape together twice. Papillion will be coming soon.

Look up IMAX nature flicks and other documentaries. We’ve seen a bunch of them. There was one series about the seas (4 discs having 7-8 edisodes) that were tremendous. We also like Jane Goodall films.

If she had the patience to read, Children of Heaven is a great foreign flick. Not for kids, but Monsieur Ibraham is one of my favorite foreign films. It made me fall in love with Omar Sharif.

I have almost 400 films in my queue. I love this stuff.

OMG! I found you!!!! I lost you when you stopped at your old blog and I’ve found you again!!! I’m doin’ a little happy dance here!! Woo hoo!! Remember me?? CJ? Gypsy Girl?? Mouthy Mom?? I’ve had lots of blogs! I’m so happy to find you, Bug and Geo again!!!

  5. JustMe Says:

ok, totally not bug-appropriate. but i highly reccomend Lost and Alias dvds. and you will understand stuff from lost (not everything though). and a great new show is Heroes on nbc. the eps. are online. movies: real women have curves, maria full of grace (not sure if you like foriegn), if you like musicals, as do i, i reccomend sister act. i know its lame but i love it. and annie of course too. i liked wag the dog, in a funny depressing kind of way. and ella enchanted is ok for adults too. umm, in america, goodbye lenin, beautiful country. ok, i’ll stop rambling and taking up space now.

  6. Margie Says:

I like your taste in music!

  7. kelli in the mirror Says:

Yes, I LOVE High School Musical. Jump In is pretty good too. :)
I used to like Flight of the Navigator when I was around Bug’s age I think. Princess Bride, pretty much any musical although I’m sure you’ve seen them all, Labyrinth, Legend…
I started watching Lost at the beginning of season 2 and most of it makes sense. I’m totally hooked. If you started with season one I bet that would be even better.

  8. kelli in the mirror Says:

Oh, and Hidalgo. It’s pg13 I think but it’s fairly tame if I remember correctly. And based on a true story which I always find interesting.

  9. John Says:

Great list. I think Bug’s list would have been good too.

Lost and Alias are good dvd shows to watch. You won’t understand it if you start at the beginning, no one understands it, but it will be fun watching if you start with Lost.

Another show I just watched on dvd and loved was Supernatural. It was really good.

  10. akeeyu Says:

    Deck Chair Danny
    Dear Frankie
    Singing In The Rain
I Was A Male War Bride

The first two are foreign films that are kind of obscure, but I think netflix has them. They’re wonderful.

Get Bug started on classic movies. If she likes them, you’ll have an almost supply of appropriate movies for her.

  11. c Says:

For watching w/ Bug, I highly recommend Akeelah and the Bee.

For you? Monster’s Ball, In the Bedroom, Murderball, The Good Girl, etc etc etc. (Apparently I can’t come up with anything current.) Murderball is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen.

    Have fun!

  12. mominprogress Says:

OH I LOVE High School Musical :)

  13. Peach Says:

I’m not sure if netflix has this feature, but I know if you look up movies you like on Amazon, they’ll tell you what people who bought that movie also bought.. sort of getting more reccomendations from somone who also liked the same movie as you. Or at least link to other similar films.

You can also pick one of your favorite actors/actresses and look them up in imdb.com and see what else they’ve been in and rent those.. and from those movies, find another actor/actress you liked and look them up and on and on…

  14. deb Says:

As a lover of musicals, and smart movies, I cannot recommend _Camp_ enough. Summer camp for musical theater wannabies. Based on a real camp. Watch it!

  15. elswhere Says:

Oh! Veronica Mars DVDs, if you haven’t seen it already!

Also: Mad Hot Ballroom, great documentary about streetwise 5th grade kids in NYC learning ballroom dance, I bet Bug would love it.

  16. k2 Says:

I’ll chime in with yet more movie suggestions, all of which you can find on Netflix:

Bend It Like Beckham (one inference about male homosexuality which may or may not require explanation for Bug)

    The Incredibles

I’ll Be There (PG-13 I saw it on an airplane and thought it was fine, but they may have cut something)

Wallace and Grommit (all of them)

    Broadway: The American Musical (documentary)

    Mad, Hot Ballroom

    Enjoy!!
