These reviews are the opinion of an Campground Reviews' member and not the views of CampgroundReviews. This is a great State Park about 10 miles north of Natchez. When you make the left turn onto Wickcliff Rd the entrance to the Park is half a mile on the right - your GPS will want to take your further down the road, don't. When you turn in to the park the campground is about two miles further in.
The roads in and within the park are narrow, they twist and turn, there are some blind hills and there are overhanging trees. In a word, go slow coming in. If you have a reservation you go directly to your site. We never saw the Park Ranger nor the camp host the entire time we were there. The park is neat, well taken care of and there is no trash lying around. Our site was a concrete pad, perfectly level, long enough for the rig and the car but also very narrow.
There is good site separation. However, we were able to get our DISH antenna to find the satellites on the Western arch with no issue. Our Verizon cell phones worked without an issue. Our Version MiFi was extremely slow at times.
All utilities were convenient to the wet bay and worked without issue. The big problem are the bugs and the ticks. Make sure you are well protected when you venture out. We would stay here again. We camped at Natchez State Park in a Motorhome.
On Route 61 there is a Shell gas station 5 miles south of the Park entrance. In Natchez you will find all the stores you need. Visit the Natchez Visitor Reception Center. Their burgers are the best.
Nice campground, long and fairly level asphalt sites. We had water and electric hookup only. There is a dump station. Heavily wooded all around the campsites. Some sites have wooded path to the lake. Some bugs. The lake is beautiful, looks like very good fishing. Short drive into Natchez for sightseeing.
Our site was very muddy from recent rain if you stepped off the asphalt spur. Go to the Visitor's Center first to get an idea of what to do. Many tours of the antebellum mansions are available, as well as a National Park with interesting exhibits and information. Driving the Natchez Trace parkway is beautiful. Access to the Trace is very close to the campground.
We stayed in Campground B. Very nice and clean. Not a lot of spots for big rigs. Great overnight stop. Sites are close together. Verizon signal was good.
We got one of only two pull-thrus. I stayed in campground B which gives plenty of room in the site. The layout makes backing in the rv fairly easy. I only saw two pull thru sites in campground B. My site was fairly level and long. The electric and water was good and placed well on the site. There is a dump station on the way out of the campground. The roads going to the campground are little tight. Roads: Paved speed limit 15 mph with reason if you follow the speed limit they present no problems.
Sites Loop A sites is the older CG and things a somewhat tighter and closer together, we did not stay there.
Loop B Power 20,30, 50 amp with water at all sites. Dump station on the way out for loop B. Sites was level but showed evidence of some minor flooding due to rain. Bathrooms and showers were clean with good hot water and good pressure. Verizon phone and Mifi worked well. There's a lake in the park and it's very close to B loop but the boat ramp is over by the rental cabins on the other side of the dam.
They have one short nature trail about. If we're in the area again we'd stay here. All the sites, mansions, and restaurants in Natchez. Lower Natchez Trace attractions. If your up for an adventure you can go try and find the ghost town of Rodney. We found it a bit confusing getting to this campground.
Be aware that that are two separate camping areas labeled as Campground A or 1 and Campground B or 2. How you enter will depend on which campground that you are in. We were in B and entered off of the Natchez Trace Parkway via State Park Road, then Wickcliff Road to the park entrance, you then have a couple of miles to travel on very winding roads to the campground entrance.
All of the roads were in OK shape. You do pass some rather trashed-out structures on the roads to the Park, but the park itself was nice enough. We stayed at the park to visit Natchez which worked OK, but it is about 30 minutes into town. Our site was nice and level. We were able to get satellite for DirecTV by using our portable dish, but it took some work finding the signal.
Verizon voice and data were usable. We never saw any park personnel during our six-day stay. It was quiet and dark at night, which worked well for us. We stayed 2 nights in the middle of the week. We were the only campers in the park, which was a little creepy. The park has 2 campsites and we stayed in B. All spots were very shady, with lots of trees. The sites themselves had a concrete pad but there was no area next to the pad to put your rug or chairs.
The sites either sloped down, or they were covered with tree roots and holes. It rained a lot and that made for a muddy mess. Nice biking as it is very hilly! Because of the issue with the narrow pads and no room for chairs, we will probably choose another park next time. This was a very pretty, shaded park conveniently located near the Natchez Trace Parkway. Laundry, shower and hookups available. Avoid site 27 as it is one of the few sites without shade and also gets muddy.
This park was fine as a stopover in transit or as a base to visit Natchez but it is not a destination itself. We only stayed one night. The office was not located near the campground and I never saw any park employees. I don't think there were any trails but since the office was not convenient I never got a park map.
Lots of historic homes to tour in nearby Natchez, Mississippi. We ate at Roux 61 restaurant and enjoyed the food. Entrance road was in terrible, dangerous shape due to potholes and sharp curves. Don't go over 15 mph tops.
