February 14, Researchers at Murdoch University have been the first to investigate the underlying psychological mechanisms that leads to a fear of blushing. This research could greatly reduce the number of sufferers opting for nerve destroying surgery to treat blushing. For some people the fear of blushing, also known as Erythrophobia, is so intense they occasionally resort to neurosurgery in the hope that cutting the nerves that triggers the blushing will cure their ailment.
The surgery has limited effectiveness and nasty side effects, which can include excessive sweating — instead of blushing. Blushing is hardwired as an automatic response to emotional cues because of its adaptive survival function. Fear of blushing is characterised by an extreme concern about blushing in front of others, and is associated with negative automatic thoughts about the social costs of blushing. One of the key findings of the study — lead by Professor Peter Drummond and Sally Gatt from the School of Psychology and Exercise Science at Murdoch — found a greater need to focus on treating the anxiety behind blushing rather than the blush itself.
In the research paper, published by the Australian Psychological Society, Professor Drummond and Ms Gatt revealed that beliefs about feeling unlike others, and a strong need to conceal private thoughts and feelings to evade public criticism, may be particularly important for triggering a fear of blushing. Gatt, now a Clinical Psychologist, said addressing these beliefs in schema-based therapy could assist with managing a fear of blushing.
The study also discovered a chronic fear of blushing can vary in intensity depending on context and life events, and often stems from negative childhood experiences. Childhood experiences that promote psychological mechanisms increase social interaction anxiety which, in turn, increases anxiety about the costs of blushing.

However, it may also be linked to medical problems like carcinoid syndrome, fever, menopause, rosacea, medications used to treat diabetes and high cholesterol, and other triggers such as alcohol, hot or spicy foods, and quick changes in temperature. Because this action is automatic, it is nearly impossible to stop once it has begun. In fact, the harder you try to stop blushing, the redder you will usually get.
Blushing is a symptom of social anxiety disorder ; however, not all people who have SAD have problems with blushing. In addition, not all people who blush have social anxiety disorder. However, for those with SAD who have problems with blushing, reddening of the face usually happens frequently. When a person with social anxiety disorder blushes, it usually goes along with a host of negative automatic thoughts , such as "Everyone is noticing how red I am" or "Everyone thinks that I'm weird.
In fact, a number of treatments are available for problems with blushing. If your blushing goes along with other physical symptoms or appears along with a medical problem, a medical cause is likely and a medical doctor can offer the best course of treatment.
When blushing is a symptom of social anxiety disorder, cognitive-behavioral therapy CBT directed at the underlying anxiety that maintains blushing is a good treatment option. Through CBT, you will learn how to think, act and feel differently, which in turn will have a positive impact on your problems with blushing.

The authors of the study concluded that for children, those who blush and have negative or no facial expressions may be showing early signs of problems with social anxiety.

While it can cause people to feel self-conscious, blushing is not in itself harmful. This natural reaction occurs in the face of a perceived threat, and it can also be triggered by the onset of a powerful emotion such as stress , shame, or embarrassment.
Blood vessels in the face get wider and increase blood flow to the skin, which leads to the characteristic redness of blushing. In fact, some research has found that just by telling someone they are blushing is enough to induce it.
Breathing deeply and slowly will tell the brain to relax. Once relaxed, the body will stop releasing stress hormones, the heartbeat will slow to normal levels, and blood pressure will return to normal. Sometimes, blushing in response to a stressful situation can be another a source of stress, thereby worsening the facial redness. By acknowledging and accepting the blushing, it may stop this cycle.
In fact, blushing may not be such a bad thing. Research suggests that smiling may reduce stress levels and regulate the body's natural stress responses.
According to a study , people who carry out stressful tasks while smiling have lower heart rates following the task than people who do not smile while carrying out the same chores. Participants who smile also report feeling better during the activity than those who maintain a neutral expression.
To reduce facial redness, move to a cooler area, switch on the air conditioning, or remove some layers of clothing.
Sipping cold water can also be effective. Some people may simply need to avert their gaze for a moment while others may need to close their eyes momentarily. Using a green-tinted, color-correcting makeup can mask blushing because the green neutralizes the redness of the cheeks. This makeup may be especially beneficial for those who experience regular or severe blushing only in certain situations, such as during a school presentation or a work meeting.
People who have specific blush triggers may wish to avoid them. For example, those who are bothered by blushing that arises from consuming spicy foods, alcohol, or hot drinks should try to avoid eating or drinking these items.
It may not always be feasible — or socially desirable — but staying out of the limelight can help limit blushing. The reason for this is because being the center of attention can cause blushing. For example, when participants were asked to sing out loud while someone observed one side of their face, researchers found that the side of the face being watched got hotter and redder than the other side. Severe blushing that is linked to an anxiety disorder or social phobia may be treated through medication or therapy.
Cognitive behavioral therapy CBT can be an effective treatment for many anxiety-related conditions. CBT works by challenging any negative and unrealistic thoughts that cause unhelpful feelings, bodily responses, and behaviors. Because some medications can increase the frequency or severity of blushing, it may be helpful to speak with a doctor about switching to an alternative drug which does not cause blushing.
If blushing is caused by the skin condition rosacea, an excessive sweating disorder known as hyperhidrosis, or another medical condition, a doctor may be able to prescribe a treatment to address the underlying disorder and alleviate blushing. Some people who experience severe blushing that impacts their quality of life and interpersonal relationships may wish to consider surgery. It involves severing nerves to keep facial blood vessels closed.
However, complications can occur, including infection and eyelid drooping. The probability of experiencing complications increases with age, while satisfaction with the surgery decreases with age. If blushing is frequent and severe enough to impact a person's quality of life and their relationships with others, then it may need to be addressed. If these steps do not sufficiently reduce blushing, it may be helpful to discuss other options — such as therapy, medication, or surgery — with a doctor.
